1) Describe briefly the deficit model view of the factors that influence public opinion and how this view then shapes assumptions about effective climate change communication. Then contrast this view with research on how ideology, values and worldviews influence perceptions of environmental problems and what this research suggests are effective communication strategies.

2) Drawing on research related to how ideology, identity, and values influence public perceptions of environmental problems, describe how this process is amplified or magnified in today’s world of fragmented audiences and ideologically-aligned media choices.  Discuss how this presents a problem not just in gaining public attention, but also how different audiences are likely to view the same issues very differently.
