1) Drawing on class readings and discussion, describe the role that worldviews, social identity, and values play in shaping public perceptions of the safety of vaccines.  What changes in the media system over the past decade may help strengthen the influence of worldviews, social identity, and values? What does research suggest might be effective communication strategies for engaging key segments of the public on vaccines?

2) How does the cycle of hype apply to genetics, personalized medicine, and other biomedical advances? What role might public beliefs about the relationship of science and society play in shaping attitudes about such advances?  If hype and beliefs about science and society play key roles in shaping public opinion, what should scientists and their organizations do to help manage controversy and maintain public trust?
